It should be no mystery that the Indiana Repertory Theatre will close their 50th Anniversary Season with a show that celebrates the talent and creativity of its artists and artisans, as well as the joy and connectivity of live theatre. Directed by incoming Margot Lacy Eccles Artistic Director Benjamin Hanna, the IRT will bring the fan favorite whodunnit Clue to the OneAmerica Mainstage April 19 – May 20, 2023.
“Our choice on how to close this 50th Anniversary season was predicated on two things: First, we wanted to gather the maximum number of patrons to a production that would celebrate the theatre experience itself, and comedy is often a great way to do that,” said Margot Lacy Eccles Artistic Director Janet Allen. “And second, we wanted to feature the amazing skills of our artists and artisans, and there’s no better way to do that than producing a farce which requires virtuosic invention from all our theatre makers.”
The play Clue is based on the Paramount movie from the 1980s and classic board game of the same name. Invited to dinner by a mysterious host, Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlet, and the rest of the usual suspects roll the dice at a gloomy mansion where blackmail and murder are on the menu. Intricately designed, the show will bring thrills and chills, twists and turns, and lots of laughs.
“Clue is truly a multigenerational phenomenon,” Director Benjamin Hanna said. “The stage version of Clue is a delightful mashup of genres and styles. It combines our love of crime novels, mystery, farce, and gaming, all while celebrating some favorite pop-culture characters. This adaptation is a blend of iconic film moments and the board game, creating a beautiful playground for our magnificent cast to contribute their own comedic genius.”
The cast consists of a mix of local and regional talent. Creating the charismatic chaos onstage are Ryan Artzberger, Emily Berman, Emjoy Gavino, Devan Mathias, Beethovan Oden, Andrea San Miguel, John Taylor Philips, Eric Sharp, Kerrington Shorter, Claire Wilcher, and Henry Woronicz. Director Benjamin Hanna is currently IRT’s Associate Artistic Director and will take over as the Margot Lacy Eccles Artistic Director in July after Janet Allen’s retirement.
During the run of the show, the IRT invites audiences to dress up as their favorite Clue characters to join in on the fun. The Opening of the production on April 21, 2023, will also serve as a celebration of the Theatre’s 50th Anniversary, complete with music, food, and more. The Theatre will also host multiple Talk Backs and Community Conversations after select performances.
