Wild works of art will come alive as the Indianapolis Zoo hosts the 21st annual Naturally Inspired Paint Out presented by The Great Frame Up Downtown. Visitors are invited to come Saturday, April 15 to view nature through the eyes of 21 artists as they create original artworks inspired by the Zoo’s amazing animals and plants. All styles of creators — painters, illustrators, sculptors and more — will work “en plein air” (outdoors) throughout the day to bring their artistic visions to life.
This year’s Paint Out Day activities will complement the ongoing festivities that are part of xZOOberance, a spring festival celebrating nature, performing arts, animals and more. All the day’s activities are included with regular Zoo admission.
Following the event, the finished artworks will all be professionally framed by The Great Frame Up Downtown before going on display for art and animal lovers to enjoy in an online gallery on the Zoo’s website. The gallery will also include several pieces of artwork created by some of the Zoo’s artistically inclined animals. Zoo patrons will have the chance to take home their favorite artworks when they go up for bid online from June 2-Aug. 17 on the Zoo’s website. Guests can also enjoy an evening of drinks and hors d’oeuvres as they meet with the talented artists who made these beautiful pieces during the Naturally Inspired Artists’ Reception and Silent Auction from 5:30-7:30pm on Thursday, August 17 in the Zoo’s Ascension St. Vincent Dolphin Gallery.
Tickets for the reception and auction are $20 for Zoo members and their guests and $25 for nonmembers. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 317-630-2046. Proceeds from the auction help fund the care of the Zoo’s 1,400 animals and 48,000 plants as well as its global conservation initiatives.
