The Indianapolis Children’s Choir (ICC) brings its 39th concert season to a powerful close with Dawning, a compelling performance by its high school division on May 18 at the stunning St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. This final concert of the season invites audiences to experience how ancient texts are reimagined through contemporary musical styles in a setting that enhances both reverence and reflection.
“We wanted to highlight the contrast between old and new—both in text and musical genre,” says Joshua Pedde, Executive Artistic Director of the ICC. “It felt like the perfect way to wrap up our Sounds of Progress season while also giving a glimpse into the exciting direction we're heading as we approach our 40th anniversary.”
The concert features ICC’s Master Chorale alongside the Anderson Area Children’s Choir Youth Chorale. These talented singers will present movements from three significant works: Sunrise Mass by Ola Gjeilo, Gospel Mass by Robert Ray, and the classical masterpiece Gloria in D by Antonio Vivaldi. The program draws thoughtful connections between centuries-old sacred texts and the evolving ways in which composers bring them to life.
Adding to the evening’s artistry, Dr. Robert Townsend—renowned local choir director and professor—will guest conduct selections from Gospel Mass, offering a unique collaborative experience for the performers and the audience alike.
“Performing pieces of this complexity is usually reserved for collegiate-level choirs,” explains Amy Hughley, director of both ensembles. “It’s a challenge our singers have embraced, and it’s a testament to the dedication they’ve shown, in some cases over many years, as part of the ICC.”
As the season comes to a close, the concert also marks a bittersweet farewell for graduating seniors. To honor this milestone, the singers will present some of their favorite selections, including the moving Scottish ballad “The Parting Glass,” celebrating their journey and transition into the next phase of life.
