Charlie Chaplin’s love for music began in his early childhood. He taught himself to play the piano, violin, cello, and even went on to score many of his films. Despite having no formal training, his use of music to enhance storytelling in silent films showcased the importance of music that complements a film's theme and atmosphere. The original release of The Gold Rush was 6 years before Chaplin’s first attempt to compose a full-length score for, City Lights. It was also the first of Chaplin’s silent films that he revived with sound in 1942, composing an orchestral score and replacing the inter-titles with his own commentary.
Timothy Brock (composer): In 1992, the decision to produce a re-creation of the silent version of The Gold Rush was made by the Chaplin estate, seeking to restore and adapt the film score for live performance to fit the original silent 1925 version. Timothy Brock was given the original scores and manuscripts from Montreux and a digitalized reproduction of the optical soundtrack recording. Piecing together all the musical information took him an entire 9 months of work. There were many changes made, both written and unwritten, to the music as they recorded it in November 1941. In 1998, Brock began his long-standing relationship with the Charles Chaplin family and has made 15 critical editions of his scores, including The Gold Rush.
