The Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) wraps up its season with the riotous comedy The Play That Goes Wrong, presented by Oxford Financial. Written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, and directed by IRT’s Margot Lacy Eccles Artistic Director Benjamin Hanna, the production runs April 9 – May 11 on the OneAmerica Financial Stage.
This fast-paced farce follows the Cornley Drama Society as they attempt to stage a murder mystery—only to have everything that can possibly go wrong, go spectacularly wrong. From unconscious leading ladies to corpses that refuse to stay dead and actors tumbling over props, the chaos only escalates as the night goes on.
“We’ve assembled an incredible group of performers to bring this play to life—actors with impeccable timing, inventive physical comedy skills, and enormous hearts,” said Benjamin Hanna. “In a time when the world can feel divided, this show offers a chance to come together, share a laugh, and celebrate the joy of live theatre.”
First performed in Great Britain in 2012, The Play That Goes Wrong made its West End debut at the Duchess Theatre in 2014, earning the 2015 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. The show has since enjoyed a successful Broadway run, multiple UK and US tours, and continues its off-Broadway run at New World Stages.
The IRT production features several familiar faces from recent shows, including Rob Johansen (A Christmas Carol), Dominique Lawson (Little Shop of Horrors, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Brett Mutter (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), Eric Sharp (Clue), Claire Wilcher (Clue, The Folks at Home), and Sarah Price (A Midsummer Night's Dream). Making their IRT debuts are China Brickey and Ryan Hallahan.
Throughout the run, the Theatre will offer special programming, including Artist Conversations and a behind-the-scenes class revealing the secrets of the set and the physical comedy techniques used in the show.
